Kanamycin Sulfate is a water-soluble broad-spectrum aminoglycoside antibiotic. Kanamycin Sulfate is often used as a supplement to cell culture media to control bacterial contamination. The Kanamicin Sulfate is effective against gram positive and gram negative bacteria, as well as some strains of mycoplasma. Kanamycin Sulfate is also used as an additive in agar or culture media for the selection of cells transformed with the kanamycin B resistance gene.

Kanamicin Sulfate inhibits protein synthesis and compromises translation by binding to the ribosome, leading to protein miscoding and death of susceptible bacteria.
